Dan Deacon New Haven reviews
rocking at the rocks (how original!)
The night was a real treat, with everyone getting a dose of new tunes along with their old favorites. I was in heaven with two of my very favorite performers in one show, the teaming up of these two fantastic artists made for a beautiful, wonderful night. The skies had threatened to open up earlier, but we popped open the umbrellas & waited in the sprinkles – no big deal.
The crowd was in love with the performers, and the music was so incredible. Separate & together, it was a fantastic experience. The Phantom Blues Band was as tight & right on as I have ever seen them. Seeing everyone in the band having fun is one of the main things that can make or break a concert for me.
I do have to say that I have hardly ever seen Taj in anything but one of his signature shirts, and he looked good. He did seem restrained in his choice of songs & his onstage antics, like he was on "good behavior" or something. He is always appropriate for the occasion, and no matter who he has playing with him, a tremendous time is always had by all. With all of his talent, experience & knowledge, it is hard to predict what he will play or sing.
Dan Deacon? How does she keep sounding better & better? What can be said about her? She has been one of my favorites since the first time I heard her many lifetimes ago when I was a teenager. She looked fabulous through the binos & she & I are about the same age.
All in all, a fun night. I did something I haven't done in a long, long time, which is to take a road trip all by myself. After I had bought my ticket to Bontaj at Red Rocks, an Albuquerque (where I live) show was announced, so I'll be there as well. It's a long way from Red Rocks to the casino they will be playing at here, but, hey, it's Bontaj & I'd go anywhere to see them. I stayed with some of my Blues Cruiser friends & needless to say, we cruised all weekend on dry land. I did notice some handicappers & special guests sitting up front, and however much I respect them, this girl has gotta dance. I hated it that I couldn't walk up close enough to wave at Larry, (the PBB bass player) one of my all-time favorite people. One thing that bugged the heck out of me were the aisle Nazis. I understand the security reasons & all that, but I just want to know how they thought we could possibly sit still through that show. I didn't like the front roped off either; it made the performers seem too far away & detracted from the whole event.
